Tony Chen has an interesting post over at hospital impact where he challenges the status quo with regard to who we view as the competition.

I told him that because healthcare is changing so rapidly, hospitals have competitors we've never dreamed of until now. Here are 10 competitors that aren't traditionally considered, but shouldn't they be?

A Movie That Might Make You Sick

Michael Moore of "Fahrenheit 9/11" and "Roger and Me" fame has set his sights on healthcare. His next movie project, scheduled for a 2007 release, is entitled “Sicko.” According to this piece from Advertising Age, the healthcare industry is already on the defensive.

"A review of America's health-care system should be balanced, thoughtful and well-researched to pin down what works and what needs to be improved," said Ken Johnson, senior VP for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. "You won't get that from Michael Moore."

Patient School

We read a lot about becoming better-informed healthcare providers, but how do we raise the bar on the patient side of things? According to this brief from the latest print edition of HealthLeaders, some folks in Connecticut might be on to something.

The Patient School program aims to equip students with the basic skills needed to process health information, make the most of provider encounters and survive the emotional roller coaster ride that often accompanies illness.
